Overview and Status of the TU Delft Geothermal Research Well

Auke Barnhoorn, Phil Vardon and the Delft Geothermal Research theme
Delft University of Technology

Abstract:
After years of preparation, drilling of our geothermal research well on the campus of Delft University of Technology has finally begun. At the end of June drilling of our geothermal doublet began and at this moment weare coring in the reservoir within the producer well. A wireline logging campaign in the producer will follow shortly, continued by drilling, some coring and another wireline logging campaign in the injector.

In this presentation I will present the geothermal research project, all the plans and the achievements so far, including the drilling of a nearby shallow (500 m deep) monitoring well. Focus will be on the acquired wireline logging data in the nearby monitoring well and the acquired and planned logging data in the producer and injector of the geothermal doublet, with links to the expected formations in the Delft subsurface and some first images of the collected core material.

Speaker Bio:
Auke Barnhoorn is an Associate Professor in Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics at the Department of Geoscience and Engineering at TU Delft. He teaches in both the BSc and MSc programs in Applied Earth Sciences and is one of the coordinators of the MSc track Geo-Energy Engineering program. In his
research, he focuses on rock mechanics experiments and rock physics and is involved in the wireline logging of the upcoming geothermal well on the TU Delft campus.
